Is the Lock-a-Draw Legal for Hunting In Your State?

In the chart below the states in the legal column allow a draw keep for hunting.  There is an assumption here though.  If a state has a cross bow hunting season it is assumed that the use of a draw keep in that season is legal also.  You should check with your Department of Natural Resources to make sure that is the case.  In those states that show  a number as in "65+" the use of a draw keep is limited to persons more than 64 years of age unless there is a disability.   Michigan has made the draw keep legal for anyone in southern areas.  In the northern areas and UP it is legal for those 50 and older.  The actual rules for Michigan are appended on the bottom of this page.

In the Questionable column are those states in which I could not find any mention of draw keep in their hunting rules, all of which ban the use of crossbows for hunting except in the case of disability, and allow only compound and traditional bows.  The Lock-a-Draw might be considered a crossbow if they were to define a crossbow as any bow that maintains a draw by any means other than the archer's muscles.  I could not find the definition of a crossbow in the rules for these states.  Check with your state's DNR for legality.

Those states in the "Permit Required" column reserve the use of a draw keep for hunting to those with some disability.  A special license is required which may need a health professional's signature.
